The 10th Young Shakespeare Playwriting and Performance Competition were held last November 15, 2017 in the Concert Hall, Music Building F of Shih Chien University. 2017 marks the tenth year of competition for both Middle and High School. The criteria for judging were, Acting - 40%; Content – 40%; Technical Elements – 16%; and whole class participation – 4%. Acting involves body language, pacing, poise and voice. Content includes structure, clarity of moral content, creativity and originality of plot and adherence to thematic guidelines. Technical elements consist of costumes, props, staging, technical and live sound.
The title is the first message sent to the audience about the worth of the play and its content – and also the voice as a playwright. Each competing class made sure that their play titles carry a lot of interest and excitement. The Middle School Plays were: A Second Chance (G6 Bl. Ceslao of Poland), A Christmas Adventure (G6 St. Hyacinth of Poland), Musical Quinceanera (G7 Bl. Jordan of Saxony), Don’t Lose Me (G7 St. Thomas Aquinas), The Return of Nian (G8 St. Agnes of Montepulciano), and The Innocent Revenge (G8 St. Catherine of Siena). This is the first time in ten years that the Middle School had 6 classes competing.
The High School Plays were: Because of Us (G9 St. Raymond of Peñafort), The Path to Liberty (G9 St. Rose of Lima), Love is a Freeway (G10 St. Albert the Great), Detached (G10 St. Peter of Verona), Sanity (G11 St. Anthony of Florence), and Dance under Big Ben (G11 St. Louis Bertrand).
Aside from the best play, additional awards for technical were given to deserving class/play. The technical awards for Middle School were: Best Costumes for The Innocent Revenge (G8 St. Catherine of Siena), Best Props and Staging for The Return of Nian (G8 St. Agnes of Montepulciano), Best Sound Effects for Musical Quinceanera (G7 Bl. Jordan of Saxony), Best Musical Performance for Musical Quinceanera (G7 Bl. Jordan of Saxony), and Best Script for The Return of Nian (G8 St. Agnes of Montepulciano).
For High School, Best Costumes, Best Props and Staging and Best Musical Performance were awarded to Because of Us (G9 St. Raymond of Peñafort), Best Sound Effects to Detached (G10 St. Peter of Verona), and Best Script to Dance under Big Ben (G11 St. Louis Bertrand).
Acting achievements were given to commendable students namely; Best Supporting Actor – Joseph Tso, Musical Quinceanera (G7 Bl. Jordan of Saxony), Best Supporting Actress – Mariana Funes, The Innocent Revenge (G8 St. Catherine of Siena), Best Actor – Morris Yen, The Return of Nian (G8 St. Agnes of Montepulciano), and Best Actress – Minkie Mabasa, Musical Quinceanera (G7 Bl. Jordan of Saxony).
High School acting awards were given to: Best Supporting Actor – William Hung, Dance under Big Ben (G11 St. Louis Bertrand), Best Supporting Actress – Ivanna Robby, Love is a Freeway (G10 St. Albert the Great), Best Actor – Eric Lee, Dance under Big Ben (G11 St. Louis Bertrand), and Best Actress – Charlize Chen, Because of Us (G9 St. Raymond of Peñafort).
The Return of Nian (G8 St. Agnes of Montepulciano) and Dance under Big Ben (G11 St. Louis Bertrand) were judged as the Best Play for Middle School and High School respectively, which had a repeat performance last January 10, 2018 that served as 10th year anniversary showcase of Young Shakespeare Playwriting and Performance Competition.
Mr. Hiro Fu, Ms. Allison Huang, Ms. Regina Wang, Ms. Hannah Chan prepared an opening number and took turns in hosting the event. The English Department was commended for the great success of this year’s YSPC most especially Ms. Chanting Lee, G7 ELL Teacher for her dedication and organization of the event. It was truly a remarkable undertaking for the DIS stakeholders.
