Book talk: Parenting three Stanford kids

Dr. Agnes Chan, a much-respected entertainer and television personality, professor, entrepreneur, author, and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador visited Dominican International School Taipei for a book talk last November 13, 2018. She promoted her best-selling book “50 Education Methods from a Mother Who Put 3 Sons into Stanford University”.

Dr. Agnes has worked as a national advocate for the rights of children since her debut as a singer in Japan in 1972. Her first single “Poppy Flower” (Hinageshi no Hana) brought her to teen pop idol status with numerous musical awards. After studying at Sophia University in Japan, she entered the University of Toronto and graduated with a degree in developmental psychology. In 1984, deemed the International Year of the Youth, she received the IYY award for an essay written about world peace.

She launched her clothing line for children and women called “Dear Agnes”. In 1994 she received her doctoral degree of a Ph. D. in Education at Stanford University. She has served as a UNICEF National Ambassador for Japan for over 17 years. She has authored numerous books.

The first part of her talk was for DIS parents. She shared her experience as a mother. She gave tips for parents, reflections on educational goals, what kind of abilities children need, how to develop them, and how to deal with adolescent children.

The second part was for high school students. It centered on her experience as a student at Stanford. She advised students thinking of study abroad is “Go!” Follow your dreams. Her experience showed that it’s possible to study abroad at any stage of life and no matter how difficult you think it might be, there is always a way to make it happen.

Dr. Agnes was invited by Ms. Iris Chen, the DIS chief librarian and Ms. Agosh Librea, the DIS activities coordinator. In behalf of DIS community, Sr. Socorro Teofilo, OP, the Vice Principal of DIS, awarded a plaque of appreciation to Dr. Agnes Chan for sharing her experience as a mother and as an educator.

After her talk, Dr. Agnes invited the parents and students for a book signing.
