The first DISMUN workshop

The Dominican International School Model United Nation (DISMUN) hosted for the first time a MUN workshop last October 20, 2018. The aim of the workshop was to learn basic MUN knowledge and useful debate skills, along with some current or controversial issues happening in the world.

The workshop strives to widen our views on global affairs, whether you are a local or an international student in Taiwan. The keynote speaker was Dr. Jared Pendleton, principal at the American Institution in Taiwan’s Chinese Language and Areas Studies School (AIT/CLASS). CLASS is an intensive advanced language and area studies program for mid-level foreign affairs professionals preparing for onward diplomatic assignments at American posts in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Prior to this Foreign Service appointment, Jared was a special advisor in the School of Language Studies at the Department of State’s Foreign Service Institute (FSI), assisting the Dean’s Office and the East Asian and Pacific Languages Division.

Dr. Jared mentioned that the workshop would be the start of the many workshops that DISMUN will have. And he is looking forward to a conference with the participants in the near future that can be handled by DISMUN.

Experience MUN students from the different international school were invited to be the guest speakers. They discussed MUN skills. Joshua Ramos of Dominican International School and Claire Toh of Taipei American School talked about Opening Speeches; Celina Pan of Taipei European School focused on Resolutions; Dylan Yu of Kang Chiao International School spoked about Rules and Regulations; Selene Kung of Taipei Americal School talked about The Role of Psychology in Media Politics.

More than 40 students from different schools in Taipei attended the event. During opening ceremonies, Sr. Ma. Zenaida T. Ancheta, OP Directress/Principal of DIS welcomed the participants. She said the workshop is a great opportunity for students to discuss current issues. And it is with great pleasure for DIS to host this event.

The event was spearheaded by Jasper Chang, DISMUN Team member and Ginny Hwang, DISMUN President. Ms. Agosh Librea, DIS Curriculum Coordinator, Mr. Samir Eddio and Dr. Sophia Lin, DISMUN advisers witnessed the event. All participants received a certificate of participation.
