The Young Shakespeare Playwriting and Performance Competition were held in the DIS Gymnasium last November 30, 2018. It was the first time that the annual event took place in DIS Gymnasium. There were two divisions - Middle School and High School. This year’s genre is about mystery and suspense. Sr. Ma. Zenaida T. Ancheta, OP – Directress/Principal gave the opening remarks.
The middle school plays were – “The Last to Stay” (Gr. 6 St. Hyacinth of Poland), “The Parallel Universe” (Gr. 6 Bl. Ceslao of Poland), “The Cursed Artifact” (Gr. 7 Bl. Jordan of Saxony), “I Will Reveal the Truth” (Gr. 7 St. Thomas of Aquinas), “Lost in My Mind” (Gr. 8 St. Agnes of Montepulciano), and “All in White” (Gr. 8 St. Catherine of Siena).
The High School plays were – “The Virus” (Gr. 9 St. Raymond of Penafort), “The Cross Road” (Gr. 9 St. Rose of Lima), “Playing with Fate” (Gr. 10 St. Albert the Great), “November 30th“ (Gr. 10 St. Peter of Verona), “The Key of Salvation” (Gr. 11 St. Anthony of Florence and St. Louis Bertrand).
The criteria for judging were, Acting (36%), Content – (36%), Technical Elements (16%), Song (8%), and Class Participation (4%). Technical elements include – costumes, background, props, and staging, lighting, and spotlights, and sound effects. The Song criterion, which was added only this year, will have originality and performance as its norms. Apart from the Best Play, several technical elements particularly costumes, props and staging, sound effects, musical performance, and script were considered for the awards. Each class/play was asked to provide their poster which would be decided through online voting.
Individual awards for Best Supporting Actors and actresses, and Best actors and actress were given for their exemplary acting skills that include body language, pacing, poise, and voice.
“The Parallel Universe” (Gr. 6 Bl. Ceslao of Poland) was judged as the Best Middle School play. Best Costumes and Best Props and Staging were earned by “The Cursed Artifact” (Gr. 7 Bl. Jordan of Saxony). The Best Musical Performance was given to “The Last to Stay” (Gr. 6 St. Hyacinth of Poland). The runner up for the Best Middle School Play was “Lost in My Mind” (Gr. 8 St. Agnes of Montepulciano) which also earned the Best Script and Best Sound Effects.
The Best Supporting Actor and Actress were Ritsu Matsuoka of “The Parallel Universe” (Gr. 6 Bl. Ceslao of Poland) and Daphne Yeh of “I Will Reveal the Truth” (Gr. 7 St. Thomas of Aquinas) respectively.
The Best Actor was Kimi Chen of “The Cursed Artifact” (Gr. 7 Bl. Jordan of Saxony). The Best Actress was Minkie Mabasa of “Lost in My Mind” (Gr. 8 St. Agnes of Montepulciano) which made her back-to-back winner. She won it last year from the play “Musical Quinceanera” (G7 Bl Jordan of Saxony).
“The Virus” (Gr. 9 St. Raymond of Penafort) was judged as the Best High School Play. Also, they received the Best Script and Best Musical Performance. The Best Costumes and Best Props and Staging were awarded to “Playing with Fate” (Gr. 10 St. Albert the Great). “The Key of Salvation” (Gr. 11 St. Anthony of Florence and St. Louis Bertrand) took the Best Sound Effects.
This year’s Best Supporting Actor was Ethan Weng of “The Cross Road” (Gr. 9 St. Rose of Lima) while the Best Supporting Actress was Melissa Zhao of “Playing with Fate” (Gr. 10 St. Albert the Great).
The Best Actor was awarded to Morris Yen of “The Virus” (Gr. 9 St. Raymond of Penafort). Cindy Cheng of “The Key of Salvation” (Gr. 11 St. Anthony of Florence and St. Louis Bertrand) received the Best Actress Award. “Playing with Fate” (Gr. 10 St. Albert the Great) was the runner up for the Best High School Play.
Some grade twelve students received merit awards for their exceptional overall contribution- Lauren Lam, Ebel Weng, Eric Lee, and Ginny Hwang – for their lively and entertaining commentaries during the transitions whilst remaining professional, they were also checking with class directors to see if the class was ready.
Ms. Chanting Lee, the YSC coordinator received a round of applause for a job well done. She commended all the homeroom teachers and students for their full support and participation.
Dr. Mercia de Souza, Head of the Communication Arts mentioned that the winning play/class in each division will have their repeat performance sometime during the second semester, the school year 2018-19.
