Last November 27, the students had their Young Shakespeare Playwriting and Performance Competition. It was done in a very unique and exceptional way given the entire world is experiencing an epidemic due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The YSPPC is an annual event that students look forward to. The students were very much excited and jubilant since Sr. Ma. Zenaida T. Ancheta, OP, directress/principal allowed it to happen. It was done closed door at the B1 auditorium. The performing class was only allowed to be inside the venue. This year’s competition was spearheaded by Ms. Jenny Pan and Mr. Bill Wolfe. They made sure that there are order and harmony during the event and rehearsals. The transition of plays was smoothly and well-planned.
The event was live-streamed through the efforts of the MIT team headed Mr. Ian Crisostomo. The competition was divided into two divisions. Division 1 was for Middle School and division 2 for High School.
The masters of ceremonies were Rachel Lee and Jasper Chang, Student Council president and vice-president respectively. Jasper was for division one while Rachel was for division two.
Grade Eight St. Catherine of Siena won the Best Play Award entitled “Lost and Found”. Their play was judged as Best Script and Best Props. They’ve won also three of the individual awards - Aidan Nieh as Best Actor, Chun Chi “Jimmy” Tsao as Best Supporting Actor, and Ocean Mengyou Tang as Best Director. Their poster won as Best Poster.
Synopsys: Mason was walking home from school when he got hit by a truck. He loses his legs, but surgeons at the hospital attached a new pair of bionic legs. While in the hospital, he meets Dylan a heart cancer patient who convinces him that everything will be alright. Upon transferring to a different wing, he receives a letter from Dylan who passed away wishing him to be more positive and successfully learn how to walk. With Dylan’s inspiration, Mason gets used to his new legs with training and persistence. A happy ending has bestowed upon his return to his family and friends.
Grade Eight St. Agnes of Montepulciano won 2nd place for their “GONE Viral”. They’ve won also the Best Costume Award. Individual awards they received were – Best Supporting Actress - Melanie Anahi Lenigan Bautista and Best Actress - Catherine Wei Yan Wu.
The Best Lights and Sound Award goes to Grade Seven St. Thomas of Aquinas’ “Blank State” and Best Musical Performance Award to Grade Seven Bl. Jordan of Saxony’s The Royal Hostage”.
Grade Eleven St. Anthony of Florence’s “The Virus II” was awarded Best Play for division II. It was a sequel to their play last year. They received several awards, namely Best Script, Best Costumes, and Best Lights and Sound.
Synopsys: After some political unrest in Montley city, a new revolutionary leader by the name of Sebastian began to emerge and formed a new dystopian society. Liam a faithful follower of Sebastian, not knowing the true nature of Sebastian, gradually realizes Sebastian’s sinister plan of assuming power and controlling everyone. Liam breaks down and turns against Sebastian. Sebastian detects Liam’s resistance to his authority and shoves him into a prison camp. Liam’s rebellion to overturn the authoritarian government by then became futile. And thus without Liam out of the way, the New Normal of Sebastian’s reign ensued.
They took all the individual awards except for the Best Actress Award which went to Minkateko Simphiwe Mabasa of Grade Ten St. Albert the Great. Best Director for James Kao, Best Supporting Actress for Irene Hsu, Best Supporting Actors, Eric Chang, and Cheng Hsing "Josh" Lee, and Best Actors, Brandon Bor-Sheng Huang and Morris Yu.
“Fool’s Gold” from Grade Ten St. Peter received the Best Props and Best Musical Performance. The Best Poster for division II went to Grade 9 St. Raymond Peñafort’s “Mobile Dilemma”.
Dr. Mercia de Souza head of the Communication Arts Department thanked all the stakeholders who made this year’s Young Shakespeare Playwriting and Performance Competition possible through her Closing Remarks.
