On Feb. 6, 2023, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred in southern Türkiye near the border of Syria. This quake was followed approximately nine hours later by another earthquake located around 95 kilometers to the southwest. The earthquake-prone Türkiye had the most powerful recorded in 1939. It was as strong as the first earthquake this year. It was centered near Gaziantep in south-central Türkiye.
The Turkish government is leading the response. State authorities declared a level-4 emergency leading to a call for international assistance. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared a three-month state of emergency in 10 of the country’s provinces.
Governments around the world were quick to respond to requests for international assistance. The country of Turkey is recognized by United Nations (UN) in English as Türkiye. The Republic of Türkiye changed its official name from The Republic of Turkey on 26 May 2022 in a request submitted to the Secretary-General by the country's Minister of Foreign Affairs.
With this development, the DIS Campus Ministry headed by Vice Principal Sr. Jacqueline Manuel, OP issued an appeal to all members of the DIS Family to support the school’s fundraising efforts in aid of the victims of the deadly earthquake. The fundraising drive began February 13, 2023, and ended March 31, 2023. As rescuers rush to save lives, the school turns attention to the long-term post-disaster rehabilitation and recovery of the victims.
In line with this call, the Campus Ministry through its Dominican Youth Movement (DYM) conducted several activities. The activities were as follows.
With the series of activities, the total funds raised amounted to NT$215,594. This amount was channeled through Caritas Taiwan upon the recommendation of the Embassy of the Holy See. Caritas will then channel this fund to the victims of the earthquake in Syria and Türkiye. It will be equally shared.
Let us continue to pray for the victims of the deadly earthquake, for those who are in great need, and most especially, for each other. God bless us always.
